This history of the neighborhood plays a vital part in the identity of its residents. If you have lived in the neighborhood for many years, the neighborhood history is a heartfelt reminder of days gone by.
If you have just come to call the neighborhood home, it is a way to learn more about the new community you have joined. We would love nothing more than to be able to share the history of Rancho San Miguel with all who reside there. If you are interested in writing a brief history of the neighborhood to share with the community, please contact us!
Our neighborhood was begun in 1955 when Joseph Eichler, a pioneering developer, first constructed the homes nearest Ygnacio Valley Road. The Eichler development continued to be built until 1959. Inspired by Frank Lloyed Wright and Aligning himself with a stable of progressive architects - First the San Francisco firm of Anshen & Allen then Jones & Emmons, later Claude Oakland, each yearly group of homes incorporated his new ideas and floor plans. These one-of-a-kind homes are very popular today and they were then. The Eichler homes are known for their elegant modern designs with lots of character and appeal. They have open floor plans with walls of glass, blending indoor and outdoor living. Also common are atriums, radiant-heat floors. If you own one of the 11,000 unique homes Eichler built over two decades starting in the 1950’s, you know you’re living in a piece of American history.
The place for most Eichler homes is the Bay Area. About 600 were built in Southern California. Three were built in New York.
The Peninsula has most of Eichler’s homes. His company built 1,500 in San Mateo and 3,000 in Palo Alto. Another 2,500 were built in South Bay communities.
Eichler, who died in 1974, also built 2,000 homes in San Rafael and another 1,000 in the East Bay. For more information on Eichler Homes, visit www.EichlerNetwork.com
The Rancho San Miguel neighborhood includes Joseph Eichler-built homes and also many great ranch-style homes, most of which were built by the quality builders Jordan & Reed. Jordan & Reed started construction in 1957 and built the last homes in Rancho San Miguel in 1960. Whether you are a hip CA-Modern home enthusiast or prefer a more traditional style home, Rancho San Miguel offers the best homes and the best location with its close proximity to all amenities, top public schools, parks and regional trials. We are just minutes to downtown Walnut Creek, BART and Freeway access, but perhaps most importantly, we have the best diverse mix of wonderful neighbors including many young families, some great original owners and professional people.
